How to Make Your House a Home

Written by Arelys Alexander | November 17, 2021

You’ve recently purchased your luxury custom house and are now in the process of moving everything in and finding the perfect place for every piece of art, furniture, and knick knack.  Basically, you’re trying to turn your house into a home, and yes the two terms really are very different.

A house is just a foundation of a building, while a home is what you make it. Your house won’t turn into a home unless it has a little touch of you in every room and corner with the right type of furniture, paint color, and every other little decorating detail. Now, it doesn’t have to be designer furniture or expensive collectibles that turn your house into a home, but it does have to include little trinkets and memories that are a part of you. Here are a few steps that will help you achieve the task of making your house a home:

Bring the Greens Inside

Green is the liveliest color you can find. It represents freshness and nature. Bringing this specific color into your house can bring life into your home. You can plant flowers in unused jars and place them on the windows, have a florist create a weekly flower arrangement as a centerpiece in your living room or dining room, or bring some lush green plants inside your home to provide a sense of fresh air. Green is also a color that is timeless.

Picture Perfect

Your pictures don’t belong under your bed, stuck in the hard drive of your computer, or in your icloud; they belong out in the open. They belong in a place where everyone can see them and relive the great memories associated with each one.

Photos of you, your friends, and your family are one of the things that turn your house into a home. You can arrange your pictures in an artistic manner by hanging them with strings, making homemade frames, or anything else your taste desires. You can even opt for a picture wall where you paint a side of your wall a bold color and hang pictures on it for an artistic expression of your individual style.

Add Some Color

Maybe you enjoy a beautiful, crisp white palette or enjoy the soft touches of pastel colors. Or maybe you like to unleash your artistic side and choose unorthodox colors or wild patterns that complement your style.  Either direction you choose, you should always make sure you balance your colors and patterns to personalize your space and turn the house into your home. You can opt for neutral walls and spice it up with some brightly colored cushions or funky rugs, bring out the charm in your home with a soft contemporary look, or increase the intensity with animal prints or dark, sultry colors.

Mirror, Mirror on the Wall

Live your very own fairytale by adding mirrors to your living room wall or as an accent piece to your gallery. Mirrors, especially big, beautiful antique mirrors, will change the entire look of any space, as well as enhance your home’s natural lighting.

Add Your Corner

The house you are living in won’t be your home unless you add your very own corner. A place that is just for you to keep all of the little things you treasure: your favorite books, your journal, your most comfortable chair, or a reading light to enjoy the space at any moment of the day or night.  It will be your space where you can escape after a long day of work.

Personalize Your Home With Art

Your house needs art to be complete, and your walls are craving it. Dust off your old paintings and find them a new home in your custom house. The familiar paintings on the walls will have you reliving the memories bound to them, and the memories associated with them are vital for your new house to feel like home.

Light It Up

Lighting may not seem like much, but it plays an important role in turning a house into a home. Adding different lamps and chandeliers can really change the look of the house. Dull, warm light can really make your house feel like home.

When you move into the house, bring in your lamps, play around with lamp shades, tamper a little with bright fluorescent lights or natural lighting, and add your own personal touches to make your home feel cozy, like your very own cocoon.
